Breast ptosis
A ptotic breast is a breast which is dropping. This condition is not related to the size of the breast. A small breast may be as ptotic as a large one. Obviously, the treatment differs from one situation to the other.
The consultation
It is mandatory. It allows the evaluation of the extent of the ptosis, to appreciate the skin quality, to notice the stretch marks and the size of the breast.
The surgeon will then discuss the desired size of the breasts, the shape and the location of the scar, with the patient.
The techniques
There may be three different cases :
- ptotic large breasts : reduction mammoplasty, ptosis correction ; the scar is usually an “inverted T”,
- ptotic small breasts : the breast volume has diminished after multiple pregnancies or weight loss. The placement of the implant allows to restore the original size. The incision will be placed around the areola, either all around or only in the inferior portion, depending on the extent of the nipple ptosis,
- ptotic “normal size” breasts :
- - if the patient is happy with the size of her breasts, only the ptosis will be corrected with some skin excision and breast reshaping. The scar will be an “inverted T” or only a vertical one,
- - if the patient wishes larger breasts, the same procedure will be performed along with the insertion
of implants : scars will be smaller.
- Preoperative tests are required. For women over 35 and those who have had children, a mammogram is needed.
- Hospitalization : 24 hours.
- Duration of the surgery : 2 and a half hours.
- Anesthesia : general.
- Dressing : compressive and moulding for the first 8 days, then a regular bra night and day for 1 to 2 months, depending on the operation.
Breasts
Ptotic hypertrophied and very asymmetrical breasts. Two month result.
Ptotic breasts after three pregnancies. The ptosis is corrected, the volume modification has been minimal.
